Some of the most popular articles we published this year include:

How to Build a Shipping Container Home with a Small Budget

From this article, we learn that one of the most common reasons people want to build container homes is because they can be cheaper than traditional homes.  We shared some tips to help keep the costs down when constructing your shipping container home.

One of the best tips was about which containers are the most affordable to use for building.  Hint: a used, 40-foot high cube container in good condition.  Many of you also enjoyed the advice about beginner mistakes to avoid. You can read the full article about building on a budget here.

5 Incredible Off Grid Shipping Container Homes

In this article, we took a look inside 5 off grid homes which were built using shipping containers. For people not familiar with the term ‘off grid’, it refers to, at a minimum, living without a connection to the electrical power grid.

In essence, you are self-sufficient.

One of the most interesting homes was the underground shipping container bunker built by Steve Rees in California.

The home was built for less than $30,000 using two 40-foot shipping containers. It means the cost was around $47 per square foot.

One of my favorite things about this house is the fact that it is insulated through burying the containers. This keeps the home cool even during the hot summers in California that can reach over 100º F.

You can see Steve’s underground bunker and the other 4 homes here.
