Costa Rica Overview: Why Build Here with Containers

Costa Rica is one of the most famous and popular destinations in Latin America for tourists and ex-pats alike. It's full of beautiful beaches, incredible volcanoes, tropical jungles, and has a modern, stable democracy.

Despite its size, we've seen a number of container projects in Costa Rica. Like most parts of Central America, most parts of the country are a fairly short trip to a port on the coast.

Building codes and permissions in Costa Rica, as in many countries of Latin America, are still in their infancy. Instead, the process involves hiring a competent designer who is licensed by the government as a registered professional.

Your designer will prepare project documents and submit them to the Federal Board of Engineers and Architects of Costa Rica (Colegio Federado de Ingenieros y Arquitectos, CFIA) via the electronic Construction Project Administration system (Administrador de Proyectos de Construcción, APC). After approval, your designer along with the builder will represent your project and have professional and legal liability for it.

Other site approvals will be necessary from the local municipality for things like water and electricity hookups. And you may even have some local officials stop by during your project construction, though a formal project inspection process doesn't really exist as in other countries.
