This very unique container home, sometimes called REDHOUSE, is set in an urban neighborhood Hamilton, Ontario. Hamilton is a medium-sized city in the Ontario metro area that sits on Lake Ontario.
The REDHOUSE is made of eight 40 foot steel shipping containers, stacked in two levels of four containers each and painted a bold red. The containers on each level are set next to each other, but the ends with the doors are reversed in what looks like a checkerboard pattern from the front and back. It results in both the front and the back of the house have four sets of container doors that are opened, providing huge windows into the interior.
The containers themselves are set on a concrete perimeter foundation that forms a basement and is almost flush with the ground in the front of the house, but at least ten feet above ground level in the back. However, the containers look right at home on this drastically sloping lot.
Inside on the ground floor, you’ll find the kitchen, spacious living room, and storage/mechanical areas. Up above on the second floor are the master suite as well as the other bedrooms and bathroom.
The house is also worth highlighting for how integrated the owner is in the project. The contractor team handled the design and placement of the containers, then turned it over to the owner for finish out. This prevented the owner from doing the complex work of cutting, welding, and lifting the containers into place.
Instead, after just one afternoon of ‘construction’, the owner was left with a building that was structurally and physically secure. The timeline for the interior work is much more flexible and can be finished as schedule and budget allow.
As far as we know, this home still hasn’t quite been finished, but we’d love to get an update if you know more information.
