Louisiana Overview: Why Build Here with Containers

Louisiana is easily one of the most interesting parts of the United States. It has a rich, varied culture all its own, owing to the interesting history that formed it.

A majority of what is now Lousiana was included in the much larger Lousiana Purchase, whereby the US bought from France a sizeable land area stretching all the way to present-day Montana.

Before that, it was a French colony, and also a Spanish Colony for a time if you go even further back in history. Interestingly, many of the present-day Cajun people trace their routes to French Canadians who migrated to Lousiana in the 1700s.

With a wide variety of ethnic groups intermingling over hundreds of years, Lousiana developed a distinct culture steeped in things like jazz music, rich cuisine, and creole language.

The culture and history also mean that Louisiana has some clear differences compared to other US states. For instance, many of their laws are not based on the English tradition, and their counties are called parishes.

Given these differences, you might think building a shipping container home in Lousiana would be especially challenging. But, it's actually not too bad!

Unlike most other states, Louisiana has a statewide building code. In other words, local jurisdictions can't create codes that are more (or less) stringent than the state code. This way, you know what you're getting regardless of where you are.

The state code is run by Lousiana State Uniform Construction Code Council (LSUCCC), and is referred to as the Lousiana State Uniform Construction Code (LSUCC). Did you catch the difference there? One less 'C' and you're talking about the building code itself, not the government body that administers it.

As far as the code, it's based on the typical ICC model codes you see in most other places, so no surprises there. Checking the LSUCCC website let's you know the specific versions of the ICC, IRC, etc. that are incorporated into the current version of the LSUCC.
