Dura Container Villa Bali

Description

If this incredible container villa doesn’t blow you away, your eyes must be closed. Set on the touristy island of Bali in the popular area of Canggu, this container home is huge, well thought out, and beautiful.

Let’s start with the basics. The home is built with 18 twenty-foot containers stacked on two levels and arranged in an L-shape. And it’s set on a large lot (for Bali), with over 1/3 of an acre of lawn and garden space.

Two features immediately jump out. First, the huge V-shaped roof, which keeps the tropical sun and rainy season deluges off the home but also has some shaded skylights to let in more ambient light. Second, the huge, high-ceiling living room that is covered in glass on two sides and is actually not made of containers.

Outside of the living room, containers make up the majority of the house. And with 18 to play with, they are used quite liberally throughout the floorplan!

The ground floor has that spacious, flexible living room, plus some offices and a large kitchen as well. Upstairs are the bedrooms, along with several inside and outside catwalks to really get a great view of the spaces.

There’s another feature of the home worth highlighting, but you can’t directly see it. It’s really more of a feature of containers, generally, and that’s flexibility. But first, why that matters.

In Bali, it can be difficult to buy land if you’re not Balinese, and especially if you’re not Indonesian. Therefore, much of the land is leased or rented for terms of 20 years or more.

The owners rented this land, knowing that at a finite time in the future, the land would no longer be theirs. So, this container home was designed so that it could be removed and transfer to another plot of land in the future.

It certainly doesn’t look like a temporary structure, but this container villa kind of is one. It’s just another reason to appreciate the design and build quality of this unique container house.
