Lindendale Container Home

Description

This unmistakable home takes small 20ft containers and turned them into a huge container home with soaring spaces. Set in a rural area just a short drive from Australia’s famed Byron Bay, this house is a shining example of what is possible with hybrid container architecture.

Containers are employed here in a unique way, essentially forming the four corners of what is close to a rectangular floor plan. The container are used for smaller spaces like bedrooms, bathrooms, and laundry rooms. In a few cases, like the master bedroom, two containers are joined side-by-side for a wider space.

The public areas, like the living and dining room, aren’t in containers at all. Rather, the home has an expansive concrete pad between all the containers that holds these rooms. With a huge roof covering all the containers, these larger public spaces end up with 16ft ceilings.

Large windows are used throughout the home, especially in areas between the stacks of containers. The windows serve a dual purpose: dramatic views and enclosing the otherwise open space between the container for climate control purposes.

All the containers were modified in an indoor manufacturing plant, then transported and stacked on site. This provided the home with higher building tolerances and resulted in a completion time of only 10 weeks.

The home is notable not only for its appearance but also for its foundation. While a concrete slab is used for the central area, the container themselves actually sit on metal piers as can be seen in the photos.

It’s hard not to love the interior and exterior appearance of the home. On the outside, a muted brown helps the home blend into its rural setting. Inside, stark white for all containers gives the interior a clean look that contrasts with the darker railing, flooring, and cabinets.

If you’ve been picturing container homes as only narrow, tiny dwellings, this house quickly opens your eyes to a completely different set of possibilities. The containers give artistic structure and privacy to the rooms that need it while providing the physical structure to literally hold up the roof.
