Inman Street Container House

Description

This contemporary container home is set just north of Detroit, Michigan is the suburb of Ferndale. While the outside used cladding to complete hide the shipping container structure, on the side there are hints of containers throughout the design.

Throughout the home, you’ll find high-end fixtures and an open floorplan, unconstrained by the factory width of the shipping containers that form it. And the designs makes use of the upside-down arrangement we’ve seen growing in popularity.

The ground level floor is where you’ll find the private area, such as the bedroom. But a staircase right at the front door takes you to the public areas above on the second floor.

There you’ll find the kitchen that seamlessly flows into the dining and living areas. And right outside the glass doors is a 320 square foot deck on top of the ground floor bedrooms below.

If you go down instead of up, you’ll enter the below-ground basement. In this unfinished space, you can clearly see the metal joists under the container of the ground floor above. And there are other container touches as well.

Many of the ceilings in the home have the familiar corrugations of the home’s shipping containers, despite the fact that all of the walls are covered with gypsum board. And the home has many other custom touches as well.

One of our favorites is the live edge wooden shelving in the hallway utility closet. The white subway tile in the kitchen also has a fun retro-modern appearance. And you don’t have to worry about the home being all show and no go, given the spray foam insulation and efficient appliances.

In summary, this home has a great layout and design for someone who appreciates a touch of container inspiration but wants the majority of the home (especially the exterior) to seamlessly blend in with traditional construction aesthetics. Thanks to the unique layout, it works great for people who enjoy entertaining.

And it has just enough of the industrial shipping container touches on the ceiling to open up those interesting conversations about the origin of the home without being overpowering to those with more subtle tastes. A perfect blend of fun and classy.
