Located near the charming country town of Gloucester, this striking container home juts out of the top of the bank of the Barrington River. It’s constructed from four shipping containers (three 40 foot and one 20 foot) and features off-the-grid capabilities like solar power with batteries and tank water with river water back-up.
The ground floor of the house consists of bedrooms and a bathroom set inside one 40 foot and one 20 foot container, set a few feet apart. In between is a landing for the staircase leading upstairs.
The second floor is made of two 40 foot containers placed at right angles to the lower level containers. This creates covered porches for the floor below and sunny decks above. The second floor also holds the living room and kitchen areas. There is also an outside bathroom, completely separated from the main house.
The entire container house is covered in glass doors and windows which emphasize the stunning views of the river valley right outside. And there are plenty of places to relax in lounge chairs on the various deck and porch areas, depending on the view you want and the amount of sun you want to catch!
Thanks to the way containers can bridge over terrain, this house was a great fit for a steep building site. And with the small footings required, the site was only minimally disturbed for the construction. In short, it’s a home that is beautiful and eco-friendly, both now and while it was being built.
