Rochester Road Container House

Description

We love this multi-textured container home that combines soaring interior spans, unique exterior spaces, and a diverse set of facades. Set in the container home hotbed of suburban Michan, this Royal Oak Container Home is one of several you’ll find nearby.

The defining view of this home is the street elevation. You enter the two-story house in the center of the structure, and visible, stacked containers make up the left side of the building. On the right, a vertically oriented 20ft container is used to provide an accent, covered with brick and horizontally slatted wood. It also is home to the interior staircase connecting both levels of the home.

Moving around the outside of the home, you’ll find a covered nook porch on the left side made from a cut 40ft container. There’s also an uncovered porch on top of the attached garage in the rear of the house. Plenty of exterior areas to enjoy the temperate weather while it lasts.

You can see further hints of the container origins of the home as you move the back of the home and around to the right side. The containers are actually laid out in a U-shape, with the middle of the U roofed over and enclosed with traditional construction to create the large interior living room.

The inside of the home also makes few attempts to hide the containers unpinning its structure. The ceilings of several rooms show the container corrugations, and from the living room, you can see the sides and ends of multiple red containers as well.

Modern touches abound, like bamboo floors, exposed HVAC ductwork, and gourmet kitchen appliances. The three bedrooms are all upstairs, cleanly separating public and private spaces within the home.

There’s also tons of natural light from the abundant windows in almost every room. If people are picturing a container house that’s dark and dreary, one look at this home will completely upend their impression of what a container home can be.
