This three-story container house is far from normal with its unique colors and upside-down windows. In fact, the owner, Zac Smithey, said it was just like a big sculpture project. Which makes sense, given that he’s an artist and he and his wife Brie view being different as a positive trait!
Set in beautiful St. Charles, Missouri, this home makes use of eight 40-foot containers. With well over 2000 square feet of interior space, it’s full of antiques, reclaimed materials, contemporary portraits, and just an overall interior design that is far from normal and perfectly captures the owners’ personalities.
Examples of the special touches include a custom bar and colorful kitchen table, a pantry with a shelf made from an old door, and a living room filled with antique ceramic tile. Let’s not forget the thoughtful repurposing of old wooden cable spools into stair treads and the abundant use of rope as a decorative element throughout the home. Or how about the custom cantilevered bed with no traditional support beneath it and the custom dog bed in the living room.
Every corner of the home is eye-catching and art permeates the space. Guided by budget and sustainability plus an unwavering eye for detail, the Smitheys salvaged an almost uncountable number of unique items around the house. The Smithey Container House is truly a one-of-a-kind home that serves as an inspiration for us all.
