This tiny container home in Kansas City has some unique twists. To start with, it only has a single 40-foot high cube shipping container (320 gross square feet), but the home is 920 square feet. What makes up the difference?
Two things. First, there is a traditionally constructed section of the house that juts out from the container, right where the home entrance is located. Second, the container is set on top of a full concrete basement.
Let’s start with the ground floor. Upon entering the home, you step into a foyer that doubles as a stair landing. On the other side of the room are sliding glass doors leading onto the expansive deck outside. There’s a sitting area over to the left with another sliding glass door that replaced the steel container doors and looks out behind the house. The other end of the container has a seating area with bar stools, a galley kitchen, and a bathroom at the end.
Downstairs in the loft-like basement, you encounter a large room with a bed at the base of the staircase. The room connects to a long hallway that doubles as a closet and ends with another bathroom that also includes a laundry area.
This home is another example of a reverse/flipped layout, with the main bedroom on a different level than the public areas of the house. In this case, the master suite is below grade in the basement instead of on an elevated second floor.
We’re impressed with how much this home achieves with so little, just a single container and a basement. It’s a modern, cozy container home that has an elegant interior design and finish out. And, you don’t feel particularly cramped, especially with all the windows and the large deck.
