The Las Vegas Downtown Container Park is an incredible open-air retail and entertainment destination made from 43 shipping containers. Set on a 1.3 acre lot in the popular Fremont Street district of Downtown Las Vegas, the park has room for almost 40 tenant businesses included restaurants, retailers, and more.
One of the most prominent features is the children’s playground. It includes a large, artificial treehouse inspired by the movie Swiss Family Robinson, plus four shipping containers turned vertically and connected with bridges and slides.
The park also includes indoor and outdoor event spaces. In short, it’s intended as a place where you can catch a performance, grab dinner or a drink and then peruse the shops, all while keeping an eye on your kids at the playground.
The Container Park was the brainchild of the late founder of the Zappos shoe website, Tony Hsieh, who was inspired by other container parks he’d seen around the world. The facility is actually built with a combination of 43 shipping containers and 41 Xtreme Cubes, which are container-like boxes that are typically used in mining and oil/gas industries, and can be made wider and taller than containers.
The project purposefully avoided chain stores and instead seeks out unique tenants, especially businesses that are just getting started. Businesses have the option of several size options, with many made from more than one box joined together. Almost all of the spaces try to take advantage of the decks and shared ground-level open areas for seating.
The project is a well-known Las Vegas tourist attraction and won Best Office/Retail/Mixed-Use Project from the Engineering News-Record, Southwest in 2014.
