Set just a quick five-minute walk from beautiful Clarens, South Africa, the Triton container home is an off-the-grid visitor accommodation. But don’t let that scare you, as you won’t have to ‘rough it’ in this humble cabin.
The design is inspired by a common theme for container homes: two parallel containers that are separated and covered by a roof. This ‘space between’ layout greatly increases the floor area with minimal increase in cost. And as you’ll notice, large store-front windows and doors on the backside space really bring in the light.
And let’s talk about that roof, specifically. The clerestory roof design is a huge source of light as well, with windows on the ends of the roof as well as along the clerestory wall. It’s a relatively simple addition that gives a lot of architectural character.
The home has one bedroom and one bathroom, a proper living room, and a good bit of indoor/outdoor flex space from the space between the containers as well as the back porch.
Off-the-grid often brings up worrisome looks, but this home has plenty of creature comforts. Hot water and solar-powered lighting for the win!
And while you can certainly enjoy the simplicity of the home and the surrounding nature, it’s a quick stroll down to town where you’ll find shops, restaurants, and art galleries. Or head out for a hike at the nearby Conservancy.
